This lecture is designed to explain the end of the Civil War, with particular regard to the Confederacy's circumstances in 1865. This will help students to understand the conditions that result in a determined society being unable to fight any longer, something that is repeated in several instances throughout history. It will also show students the possible consequences of protracted warfare upon society. Beyond that, it will help students to develop historical analysis skills. They will be required to draw conclusions based on historical evidence and place themselves in the historical context in order to understand why history took the paths that it did. These are crucial skills for studying history, but also for life in general. For their entire lives, students must know how to draw conclusions and take positions based on evidence in order to stay well-informed and responsible citizens.
